“Pitch Black” Confirmed as 5th English Mega Evolution Set

Mega Darkrai ex is coming to the English TCG this July — and the road there runs straight through one of the most anticipated Japanese sets in recent memory.

According to PokeBeach, the fifth main English Mega Evolution set has an official name: Pitch Black. The set is confirmed to release on Friday, July 17th, with prereleases running from July 4th through July 12th — a window that will keep collectors and competitive players busy heading into the summer.

The name is a direct nod to Darkrai itself. The Mythical Pokémon has long carried the epithet “the Pitch-Black Pokémon,” making the set name one of the more thematically fitting in the Mega Evolution series so far.

What Is Abyss Eye?

Pitch Black’s source material is Japan’s upcoming Abyss Eye (アビスアイ), the fifth expansion in the Japanese Mega Evolution series. According to PokeBeach, Abyss Eye will release in Japan on May 22nd — which, in a quirk of scheduling, is the exact same day as the English Chaos Rising set launches stateside.

The set’s trademark was originally uncovered in June 2025, creating one of the longest gaps between trademark discovery and release in recent years — nearly eleven months of anticipation for collectors and competitive players. PokeBeach noted that the trademarks for Abyss Eye and its follow-up set were also revealed out of order, adding an unusual layer of mystery to the build-up.

Each booster box for Abyss Eye will contain 30 packs, and notably, this is the first Japanese Mega Evolution set to carry a retail price of 6,000 yen — a slight increase from the 5,400 yen of previous sets — with individual packs priced at 200 yen. The set size has not yet been officially confirmed.

Mega Darkrai ex Takes Center Stage

The headline card of both Abyss Eye and Pitch Black is Mega Darkrai ex, marking the return of a Dark-type Mega Evolution to the TCG. According to Geeks + Gamers, this represents the first Dark-type Mega Evolution in the TCG since Mega Gengar ex appeared in Phantasmal Flames in 2025.

Darkrai’s Mega form originates from the Pokémon Legends: Z-A Mega Dimension DLC, giving the set a strong tie-in to the broader Pokémon media landscape. The set is expected to carry a strong focus on Dark-type strategies and shadow-driven mechanics centered around Mega Darkrai ex.

As for the actual card list, the community is largely still in the dark — intentionally or otherwise. No official card reveals for Abyss Eye have been made yet, which is not entirely unusual given the set’s release is still over a month away. PokeBeach forum members have noted that Japanese set reveals typically begin dropping around a month before release, suggesting card previews could begin appearing in mid-to-late April.

Another Small Set — And Why That Matters

According to PokeBeach, because there are no other Japanese sources beyond Abyss Eye to draw from, Pitch Black will once again be a near 1:1 translation of its Japanese counterpart — following the same pattern as Phantasmal Flames, Perfect Order, and Chaos Rising before it. That means English players should expect another relatively small set.

This trend has become a defining characteristic of the current Mega Evolution era. Japan has stopped producing subsets, which has left the English TCG without the supplemental card pools it historically used to pad out its sets. Whether this signals a permanent shift toward smaller, more frequent global releases — or a temporary response to ongoing TCG supply shortages — remains an open question. As PokeBeach put it, fewer unique cards per set means the supply can be concentrated, potentially making each individual card easier to find at retail.

Community sentiment on smaller sets is mixed. Some players welcome the tighter focus and hope it keeps scalpers at bay. Others feel that smaller sets haven’t translated into noticeably higher card quality, with the ratio of useful to bulk cards remaining roughly the same.

What the Community Is Speculating

With no official card list yet, fan speculation has been running hot. A few predictions have gained traction on the PokeBeach forums:

  • Lost Zone mechanics returning: Fans on the PokeBeach forums have noted that the dark, abyss-themed set feels like a natural fit for a Lost Zone comeback, calling the prospect “exciting and terrifying.” The Lost Zone last appeared as a central mechanic during the Sword & Shield era sets like Lost Origin and Lost Thunder.
  • Mega Slowbro: Several community members are speculating that Mega Slowbro — currently missing from the Mega Evolution card pool — could debut in this set, particularly given its potential competitive relevance ahead of the World Championships.
  • Ghost and Dark-type synergy cards: Given the thematic overlap between Darkrai and Ghost-types, Pokémon like Giratina, Gengar, and Chandelure have been floated as likely inclusions.

These remain community theories, not confirmed card reveals.

Japan’s Upcoming TCG Schedule

According to PokeBeach, here’s the full picture of Japan’s 2026 Pokémon TCG release calendar as it currently stands:

  • May 22ndAbyss Eye featuring Mega Darkrai ex
  • July 31stStorm Emeralda featuring Mega Rayquaza ex
  • July 31st: Three “MEGA Starter Set ex Decks” featuring Eevee ex, Zoroark ex, and Meowscarada ex
  • September 16th: A 30th Anniversary Celebration set, alongside a “30th Celebration Premium Deck Set Espeon & Umbreon”
  • October 16th: Nine “30th Celebration Card Sets” featuring all 27 Starter Pokémon
  • TBDAura Seeker, possibly featuring Mega Lucario Z

The 30th Anniversary sets are particularly notable — PokeBeach notes that TPCi has already confirmed a special anniversary set will release worldwide, presumably in October to mark the TCG’s 30th anniversary, echoing the pattern set by Expansion Pack 20th Anniversary in 2016 and 25th Anniversary Collection in 2021.

What to Watch For

With Abyss Eye still weeks away from its Japanese release, the next major milestone will be the official card reveals, which most expect to begin in mid-to-late April. Once the full set list is known, the picture for Pitch Black’s English card pool should come into focus quickly — with the usual caveats around promo swaps and blister exclusives.

For now, Pitch Black is shaping up to be one of the more thematically rich sets of the Mega Evolution era. Whether it can match the collector excitement of earlier entries like Ascended Heroes will depend heavily on what Mega Darkrai ex actually does on the card — and whether those Lost Zone rumors have any teeth.
