Mega Pokemon ex Are Coming Back to the TCG!

Showcased in The Pokémon Presents on Pokémon Day 2025, and tested through the introduction of Mega evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, we now have official confirmation that Megas are making it to the TCG in 2025.

Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex are the flagship Poke´mon shown in the trailer. Let’s unpack some of the key details:

First and foremost Mega Evolutions are returning which means enhanced Pokémon designs, always awesome to see a Mega version of a Pokémon.

Secondly, this changes the gameplay dynamics as Mega Pokémon ex provide the opposing player 3 prize cards when knocked out, that’s half the game’s prize cards right there. It’s also worth noting that even though Mega ex’s are an enhanced version of an ex, you can evolve directly into a Mega ex from it’s pre-evolution stage 1 unlike Vstar cards which require the V version to evolve.

As for the card design, it seems the lettering treatment we are getting will potentially be a gold foil, we can also see from the mockups in the trailer that double rare Mega ex cards will be textured, similar to how current Tera ex’s are. There also seems to be a glittery shimmer at certain points but it’s unclear if those are added in post or suggesting the cards will have that physical effect.

We also noticed that Lucario’s moves contains Mega Brave, and Gardevoir’s has Mega Symphonia. We recently posted about two trademarks filed in Japan for ‘Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia’ so it’s safe to say the upcoming Japanese sets will include these cards possible as the flagships. Seeing as we are seeing them early in English, it’s likely they will both be in the same set based on the two Japanese sets that come out.
