Niantic, renowned for its augmented reality (AR) game Pokémon Go, has agreed to sell its games division to mobile gaming company Scopely for $3.5 billion. This transaction includes popular AR titles such as Pikmin Bloom and Monster Hunter Now, as well as companion applications Campfire and Wayfarer.  The acquisition is set to bring Niantic’s 30 million monthly active players under Scopely’s management, enhancing its portfolio of successful mobile games.  

Post-acquisition, Niantic plans to concentrate on developing geospatial artificial intelligence technologies through a newly established entity, Niantic Spatial Inc. This strategic pivot allows Niantic to leverage its expertise in AR and mapping technologies beyond gaming applications.  Meanwhile, Scopely’s acquisition aligns with its strategy to expand into AR and geolocation gaming, further solidifying its position in the mobile games industry.
